About

About

A lifetime of music best describes Matt Alter’s journey.

After graduating high school, Matt purchased his first guitar and dove in as a self-taught musician. Those formative years laid the groundwork for what would later be refined under the guidance of a dedicated instructor—“thank you, Kenny”—who helped set him firmly on the right musical path. As life often does, career and responsibilities eventually took precedence, and the guitar was set aside. Still, the desire to play never faded.

Once established in his career as a surgeon, Matt found himself drawn back to music. What began as a return soon became a second act. He performed in multiple cover and original bands throughout the Richmond, Virginia area, earning opportunities to open for nationally touring acts. Along the way, he found renewed inspiration and mentorship with guitarist and producer Tavis Stanley (Art of Dying), a creative partnership that continues to shape his sound.

Now based in Charlotte, North Carolina, Matt has fully embraced his identity as a solo artist. His debut album, The Bitter Pill, was released on February 14, 2020, followed by Race to the Finish on December 5, 2021. His third album, Did I Offend You?, produced and mixed by Tavis Stanley, was released on December 15, 2023.

His fourth solo album, I’m Lonely… It’s My Fault., once again produced by Tavis Stanley, was released March 6, 2026 to great reviews.

To bring this music fully to life on stage, Matt has formed a full band, Matt Alter and The Misunderstood, and is actively booking live performances.

An album that feels intimate and reflective — rock music that prioritizes personal narrative and relatable introspection as much as guitar melodies and songcraft.

Did I Offend You by Matt Alter is a guitar-driven rock album built on gritty riffs, big choruses, and unapologetic honesty. Blending the weight of hard rock with the melodic instincts of alternative and pop rock, the record captures the tension between confrontation and self-reflection. Across the album, thick distorted guitars and driving rhythms power songs that explore frustration, broken connections, and the moments where pride, regret, and truth collide. The music carries a raw edge while still leaning into memorable hooks and sing-along choruses, giving the songs both punch and accessibility. At its core, Did I Offend You is about speaking your mind, owning the consequences, and finding clarity in the aftermath. Loud, direct, and emotionally grounded, it’s a record that thrives on the energy of real guitars, real emotion, and the kind of songs built to be played live. 🎸🔥

“Empty Cans” is a gritty, emotionally charged rock track that captures the moment when the noise fades and reality sets in. Fueled by driving guitars, heavy atmosphere, and a powerful melodic hook, the song dives into the aftermath of long nights, hard truths, and the weight of self-reflection. Blending modern post-grunge intensity with alternative rock grit, “Empty Cans” delivers a raw, honest punch for anyone who’s ever stared down the consequences and kept moving forward anyway.

Some songs take years to write, even if they only take a few minutes to play. “Tossed Away” is one of those songs. It carries the residue of long held thoughts. Thoughts about loyalty, resentment and the slow realization that not everyone values you the same way you value them. “Tossed Away” is also a song about a quiet kind of recognition. The moment when disappointment replaces confusion and the truth finally begins to settle in. “I’ve thought about this theme many times in my life,” Alter explains. “People using you for their own gain. It really sucks. We’ve all felt it at some point. I finally was able to verbalize that sentiment in a song.” A punchy drum intro allows Alter’s vocals to take center stage here and the lyrics carry the emotional load. But the arrangement is not over done or overpowering. Instead everything here feels more measured. The chorus is loud and builds more tension so that when you hear “you used me” the lyric really stands out.” - Leslie Sherman

Indie Music Discovery

Matt Alter, singer-songwriter, invites fans on a deeply introspective ride with the newest release “Train to Nowhere.” Renowned for his ability to convert emotion into sound, Alter serves up a track that feels both personal and collective, a melancholy rumination on the twisting roads of life and the uncertain destinations they lead to. “Train to Nowhere” is a thoughtful investigation of solitude and thought, one that invites listeners pause and reflect. With each note and lyric, Alter creates a ruminative soundscape that speaks to anyone who’s ever experienced the push-pull between yearning and surrender. The track has a quiet intensity, tempering melancholia with pockets of understated beauty, making it the sort of song that stays with you long after the last chord fades. This release establishes Alter’s reputation as an artist willing to wear emotional openness on his sleeve. Instead of chasing radio trends or formulaic hooks, he leans into the subtle strength that comes from feeling, showing that introspection can be as engaging as any anthemic chorus. Lovers of contemplative songwriting will be drawn to the nuanced textures and honest lyricism of “Train to Nowhere.” Be it through the slowly unfurling instrumental, the tender vocal delivery, or its thought-provoking lyrics, Matt Alter’s latest track is a testament to music’s capacity to encapsulate those quiet, reflective moments we all go through in life. It’s a journey without a destination, and yet one that feels deeply needed.Portable speakers” - Harper Jacobs

The introspective alt rock single, “Call Me,” from North Carolina musician and surgeon Matt Alter has an almost impossible-to-ignore vibe. The track is Alter’s first single from his commendable debut album, The Bitter Pill.”
